New to Elektor publications, overall, I have mixed views of the Robotics & Automation edition. It has interesting content and gives valuable insight into various market offerings but feeling a bit like a construction guide for them. It has a few general, introductory type articles. Useful, especially for newbies and covering topics like pneumatics.
Overall, glad I bought it; however, I feel it doesn’t adequately address the Forward’s ambitions: The emphasis on the journey, means to create, whilst developing understanding mechanical, electrical, and programming in an integrated form. This is more than just constructing a kit and using readily available software.
To me, the market offerings appear siloed kits in this regard, giving little insight into the design and creative process, nothing about extending it or, what would be involved DIY basis.
For example, The Wheelie (10), more of all-round and expansive article in keeping with the Forward’s ambitions. Once constructed, should I wish to extend/adapt, such as place a camera on top of the wheelie. There is no insight to the design and its “performance Envelop” or key web refs, it’s hard to think of what is possible without buying it and trying it. Missing refs??
Maybe, there is more details with the kits? Equally, a chance to help hobbyist, and even connect to suppliers of parts, develop topics in detail, etc for those who want to go it alone. Thereby empowering the hobbyist.
This piqued my interest, but I feel didn’t empower my journey. Despite this criticism, there is much to “see” and become a little more familiar on what is on offer.
