Quite unintentionally a one-page story on an old Heathkit tube tester in the December 2004 edition of Elektor magazine spawned dozens of ‘Retronics’ tales appearing with a monthly cadence, and attracting a steady flow of reader feedback and contributions to the series. Since launching his Retronics columns, Elektor Editor Jan Buiting has never been short of copy to print, or vintage equipment to marvel at. This book is a compilation of about 80 Retronics installments published between 2004 and 2012. The stories cover vintage test equipment, prehistoric computers, long forgotten components, and Elektor blockbuster projects, all aiming to make engineers smile, sit up, object, drool, or experience a whiff of nostalgia. To reflect that our memories are constantly playing tricks on us, and honoring that “one man’s rubbish is another man’s gem”, the tales in the book purposely have no chronological order, and no bias in favor of transistor or tube, microprocessor or discrete part, audio or RF, DIY or professional, dry or narrative style. Although vastly diff erent in subject matter, all tales in the book are told with personal gusto because Retronics is about sentiment in electronics engineering, construction and repair, be it to reminisce about a 1960s Tektronix scope with a cleaning lady as a feature, or a 1928 PanSanitor box for dubious medical use. Owners of this book are advised to not exceed one Retronics tale per working day, preferably consumed in the evening hours under lamp light, in a comfortable chair, with a piece of vintage electronic equipment close and powered up.

Wie enigszins bekend is met moderne microprocessor systemen als Arduino, kent ongetwijfeld ook de problemen met dit soort kaarten. Ze zijn te duur om voor elk project een aparte kaart aan te schaffen en zijn bovendien nogal fors van formaat. Het aardige van de ATtiny is dat de schijn bedriegt. Het lijkt een klein IC met een beperkt toepassingsgebied, maar het heeft een verbazingwekkend scala aan (speelse) mogelijkheden. Dit boek beschrijft de enorme veelzijdigheid van de ATtiny microcontroller aan de hand van ongeveer vijftig leuke elektronica projecten, speciaal gericht op de beginner.  De meeste ontwerpen zijn volledig uitgewerkt, enkele zijn meer als ontwerpidee gepresenteerd. De inhoudsopgave laat zien dat we ons op vele terreinen zullen begeven, van zonnevolger tot helling indicator. Dit boek is beslist geen theorieboek. Het is een boek dat gelezen zal worden met de soldeerbout in de hand. Voor het programmeren van de ATtiny maken we dankbaar gebruik van een Arduino kaart. Als de Arduino ingesteld word als programmer, kunnen we er de meeste Arduino “sketches” mee overzetten naar de ATtiny. We wensen u veel plezier met het nabouwen van de schakelingen.

Ce qui se passe en électronique est par définition invisible à l'oeil nu. L'instrument qui permet précisément de rendre visibles les signaux électriques, celui par le truchement duquel les effets de l'électronique se manifestent à nous, c'est l'oscilloscope. Hélas, quand on commence à faire de l'électronique, c'est souvent sans oscilloscope. Et l'on en est réduit à tâtonner, aussi bien physiquement que mentalement. Le jour où l'on goûte à la visualisation des signaux sur un écran, c'est une révélation. Plus personne ne souhaite se priver de cet enchantement. Pas de retour en arrière. En électronique, si l'on veut progresser dans le plaisir et dans la compréhension, il faut un oscillo. Commence alors une période d'interrogation : comment choisir ? Et à peine cette question-là aura-t-elle trouvé sa réponse, il en viendra une ribambelle d'autres que l'on peut résumer en une seule : comment se servir de l'oscilloscope de telle sorte que ce qu'il affiche corresponde bien à la réalité des signaux ? Dans ce livre, Rémy Mallard, répond clairement à ces questions. Il donne aussi de nombreuses informations pour aider son lecteur à élucider lui-même de nouveaux mystères qui ne manqueront pas de surgir.
