Paul Rudman’s book articulating reliable professional SMD assembly, for mere mortals, is an excellent exposition. Detailed, but easy read. Full of simple but very practical advice, some obvious, some hard learned! Stated, making it explicit, which if noted will save one from similar pitfalls, and laminating after the event, thinking to oneself “how obvious”! We have all been there! This gives you a chance to systematic, increasing your chance for repeatable success.
I know Health Safety isn’t greatly appreciated topic, but I note UTube etc seem to ignore this part. Having worked as Lab Technician many many years ago, doing photo lithography work, he’s right to highlight this point. The chemicals used are not good for you – caveat emptor!
For me, trying to gain insight, given a realisation that SMDs are everywhere, and not everything can be done with through-hole techniques. I feel I could use this text and tackle SMD boards.
Strangely enough, I found, I was reading it as much for the next gotcha the author had run into! Such as, assembly process and components pinging across the workbench, PCB surface finish, not to use bismuth-containing low temp solder with ENIG Coating, and the challenges with reflow ovens.
A good, pragmatic introduction to SMD assembly, which I would recommend to anyone interest in this technique. I sure it could also be used more professionally, to create a reliable small scale SMD Assembly line process.
