This transceiver incorporates a tiny low power radio module, the RFM12B from HopeRF. It offers a serial interface via an ATmega328 (also used in Arduino Uno). The pre-programmed firmware allows the board to be used as a simple gateway for strings of characters between the serial interface and the ether. An Elektor FT232R USB-BoB can be connected directly to the gateway for easy access via USB.
A string of up to 62 characters can be sent to the gateway. The data will be output on a second module over the serial interface. The data rate for serial communication is set at 9600 baud.
Based in Europe, Elektor Labs uses the 433 MHz version of the RFM12B module, but it can be replaced by an 868 MHz version without much effort.
The board is also equipped with an ECC connector. The Embedded Communication Connector has been used in many Elektor projects, such as the UART Module for ECC.
