This supercool gadget built around an Arduino Uno writes the time into a layer of sand. After an adjustable time the sand is flattened out by two vibration motors and everything begins all over again.
The heart of the sand clock is formed by two servo motors driving a writing pen via a pantograph mechanism. A third servo motor lifts the pen up and down. The box with sand is equipped with two vibration motors to flatten the sand. The electronic part of the sand clock consists of an Arduino Uno and an Arduino shield with a realtime clock and driver circuits for the motors.
This kit contains everything to build this sand clock by yourself: all mechanical parts, the motors, an Arduino Uno, a special RTC/driver shield, a power adapter en even a small bag with sand. On the shield all SMDs are premounted, you just need to solder the provided headers and DC/DC converter on the board.
The software for the clock is available as an Arduino sketch. For programming the Arduino and first-time calibration of the servo motors you need a computer with the Arduino IDE installed. A detailed construction manual is available for download.

The idea for this project originated from our friends at the German Make Magazine who in turn were inspired by the plot clock from FabLab Nuremberg. It was selected in our first ever joint (Make & Elektor) hardware meeting to become one of the first projects to be refined and built into a kit by Elektor Labs. The result was published in Elektor Magazine edition 1/2017 (January & February).
